Music is the language of emotion. From the rehearsal dinner to the reception, music plays a magical role in the marriage celebration. It sets the mood for each part of your wedding, it entertains, it moves, it inspires people to dance. Helping each couple choose the perfect combination of styles and songs for their wedding is one of John’s favorite things.
The Wedding Ceremony
The prelude music before your ceremony is usually the first thing guests experience at your wedding. It can set the tone for everything that follows. Some couples keep things traditional, others choose something unexpected that reflects their unique style. Whatever your vision, John can help you put it together. Visit the Wedding Ceremony page to find out more about music options, booking information and pricing questions. Other options include John’s jazz ensembles, his country band, Walkin’ Boss.
The Cocktail Hour
Many couples choose to have the ceremony musicians play for their cocktail hour. John’s versatility allows couples to choose one style of music for their ceremony and something different for the cocktail hour. For many of the weddings that John plays, the ceremony music is classical (or pop music played in a classical style) and the cocktail hour music is acoustic singer/songwriter, jazz or something else. There are many great options. John can play solo or with a small group. Take a look at John’s Cocktail Hour Songlist which is an eclectic list of unabashedly happy love songs, songs of celebration and timeless American Songbook standards.
The Reception
John does not currently have a typical “wedding” band that plays all the top 40 hits but he does have several bands that are excellent choices for couples who want something a little different for their receptions. The John Willingham Band plays an eclectic list of familiar songs from the 60s through today. You’ll hear songs by Tom Petty, Van Morrison, The Beatles, Crowded House and many others. J’ham is a classic rock jam band for music lovers who enjoy hearing musicians explore and improvise. Expect longer heavier songs with more solos. You’ll hear songs by The Allman Brothers, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Steely Dan, Little Feat and others.
The Rehearsal Dinner
Live music helps make every party and gathering special. For an intimate white tablecloth dinner John can play classical, jazz or acoustic music. For larger parties you might consider The John Willingham Band , Windjhammer (a contemporary jazz ensemble) or John’s country/Texas Swing band, Walkin’ Boss. If you’re having an informal barbecue, John can bring an excellent bluegrass or blues band.
